I could hear Alizée singing with a slightly more modern style but with the feeling from Edith's style. To me it would be the difference between listening to Streisand and Linda Ronstadt. I actually like Ronstadt's voice for being a bit more commercial and having a bit less theatrics, or that schmaltzy broadway type sound to it.
This helps a singer become more timeless. Think of Sinatra, or Elvis. They had a style that was not associated with say, Broadway, or Vegas, but rather a style that transended a given type of recognition with any other style. It was theirs alone.
