Fifty-sixty

In it's final form:

Translation by RMJ with help of Needles

Pretty sixteen
Beautiful heroine
Of the sixties
You hip-swaying
You are divine
When you dance in the eyes of Andy

Goodbye be-bop
On the top
It's pop-art
That runs you down
To the trap
Pop-corn and hula hoop

Dream of glory and fortune
Chic in Chanel love is always glamour
At exhibitions you pose and expose youself
To 400ASA you dare
All the poses

Fifty-sixty
Born in the fifties sexy sixties
So excited
On ecstasy
Foolishly she believes all that Andy
That Andy tells to her
That she's the most beautiful
Of all the models

Like an icon
Under the Nikon
Tou turn the head
On the velvet
And Nico
Want you far away from Lou Reed

In East Village
There's no age
We are all young
Take along me
Yellow taxi
From which the legend comes

Dream of glory and fortune
Chic in Chanel love will always be glamour
I look you on polaroid
You know the time has not
Aged at all

Fifty-sixty
Born in the fifties sexy sixties
So excited
On ecstasy
Foolishly she believes all that we say
What we say about her
That she's the most beautiful
Of all the models

The flower power
Is dead on the dance floor
The electro, the punk does not yet exist
Catch the roll of the rockers
Time was changed
The rock rolls on rollers
The pop is popping

The flower power
Is dead of it's natural death
New-wave and techno does not yet exist
Go play your last role
There's no more the dandy
But you still dance in the eyes of Warhol

Fifty-sixty
Born in the fifties sexy sixties
So excited
On ecstasy
Foolishly she believes all that we say
What we say about her
That she's the most beautiful
The most beautiful

Fifty-sixty,
Born in the fifties sexy sixties
So excited
On ecstasy
Foolishly she believes all that we say
What we say about her
That she's the most beautiful
Of all the models

French transcription by Needles (with little help of RMJ & sb483)

Pretty sixteen

On a changé d'époque

Awesome RMJ. Looking at the French lyrics makes me happy to see how far my French has come in only 2 semesters as I translated a fair amount of it correctly myself. :D

The song is about Edie Sedgwick.

I think it's about Nico. She's mentioned in the song.

Nico is mentioned, but the song isn't about her.
For example in the 5th stanza:

Like an icon
Under the Nikon
You turn the head
On the velvet
And Nico
Want you far away from Lou Reed

Edie was the model and actress. Nico was brought in by Andy to front the Velvet Underground. Edie wanted to sing in the band, but wasn't allowed to. In the video you see Nico holding the guitar representing her status as band member, but stumbling. Lou Reed didn't want Nico singing in the band, and I think the stumble represents that because she didn't last past the first album and had very few songs on that album.

Also, it was Edie that was into glamour. She would spend 3 hours doing her eye makeup, was a fashion setter and into perfume. All of that is in the video, and in the lyric except for the eye makeup. I believe Andy and Dylan probably others told Edie that she was the most beautiful model.

Edie also made her last picture between the demise of flower power and the rise of new-wave, punk and techno which is also in the lyric. Edie was a drug addict and you see the terms "beautiful heroin(e)" and "on ecstacy" with reference to person who is the object of the song. I can't explain the yellow taxi, but I think it means something. Edie died of drug overdose at 27 years of age shortly after making her last picture.

i think it isn't about just one particular individual, rather a song about the world of andy warhol and the pop art era.

Well, maybe heyamigo is right and one should look at the big picture. Nico was also a model and was in films. She also had a relationship with Lou Reed and she was addicted to heroin for 20 years. It seems these women had some sad things in common.

How can that be when the first 3 lines of the song are:

Pretty sixteen
Beautiful heroine
Of the sixties

Edie Sedgwick was 16 when the 1960's decade began. The song continues describing aspects of an individual using the pronouns you, yourself, she, her and your, and then indicates that Nico wants that person kept far away from Lou Reed.
